Music programming tip of the week “Music Monitor”

When did you last analyze your competition? (not just sample them)

A 4 hour snap-shot during prime time is a great tool to check what your competition is doing. I suggest putting name of artist, title, soundcode, era, tempo in an Excel sheet and calculate averages and spread. I also suggest marking if the song is played by you.

Keep track on the results and remake the monitor if you see very big changes compared to last monitor. A good rule of thumb is to conduct a monitor once ever 4 to 6 months and / or if the competition is doing a major change.

The result might be very different from your perception of them.
